Buttercup Diner
Walnut Creek

Every seven to ten years, a restaurant interior needs to evolve. Not because something is broken, but because a space that once felt fresh can quietly start working against you — dulling the energy, blurring the brand, and leaving loyal guests a little less inspired to return. The owners of Buttercup Diner have always known this — and they've trusted Kathy Bate, ASID to make it happen across 14 remodels and five locations.

That kind of long-term partnership is at the heart of Kathy Bate Design — watching a concept mature, sharpening what works, and finding new ways to make a space earn its keep.

For this Walnut Creek update, the mandate was clear: shed the dated coffee shop aesthetic and step fully into the identity Buttercup has earned over nearly four decades. Here's how we got there.

  • The Booths — Pullman-style booths replaced the original U-shapes, instantly modernizing the silhouette while keeping the communal warmth a diner demands.
  • The Lighting — A playful curation of mid-century fixtures runs throughout the space, doing double duty: genuinely functional illumination paired with the kind of visual delight that makes guests pause and look up.
  • The Seating — At the owners' direction, comfort was non-negotiable. Elevated bench heights and fully upholstered seats and backs signal to guests: stay awhile.
  • The Murals — Custom artisan murals commissioned specifically for this project tell the story of a family-owned institution since 1988. History made tangible, and unmistakably theirs.
  • The Profit Centers — The bar and Pie Shop were designed with intention — positioned and detailed to draw the eye, invite curiosity, and move product.
  • The Ceiling & Finishing Touches — Wood ceilings, soffit planters, and curated art do the quiet but essential work of humanizing a large commercial space. The "Denny's era" is officially over.

The result is a bright, hip, modern diner that honors where Buttercup came from — and gives their guests every reason to keep coming back.
